Interior Secretary Doug Burgum said vandals were responsible for damage to the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, rejecting an assessment by the Justice Department that construction issues were to blame, Burgum said.
The Justice Department moved Friday to dismiss a felony destruction-of-property charge against former Olympian David Hearn after finding new evidence, the department said.
Burgum reiterated his view that the damage was caused intentionally, according to a statement from the Interior Department. He said the department’s assessment that construction or structural problems caused the damage was incorrect.
The Justice Department did not provide immediate public details about the new evidence cited in its dismissal motion, the department said.
