Caitlin Clark set WNBA monthly marks in August and is set to make her first appearance at the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup on Friday, the Indiana Fever said. WNBA statistics show Clark scored or assisted on an average of 44.7 points per game in August, a league record for a single month.
Clark became the first player in WNBA history with back-to-back games of at least 30 points and 10 assists, WNBA game logs show. She had 34 points and 12 assists in a 111-91 win over the Connecticut Sun, then scored 37 points with 10 assists and sank eight of 12 3-pointers in a 113-90 victory over the Chicago Sky on Aug. 23.
The Aug. 23 game also included the ejection of Enes Kanter Freedom after an altercation involving Sky guard Natasha Cloud, game reports said. The Fever’s social media caption called Clark’s performance “HERstoric,” and the team finished the month 7-4 to move to 26-14 on the season, fifth in the WNBA standings, WNBA records show.
Clark had five games in August with at least 20 points and 10 assists, a total no other player has matched over the last five seasons, according to the WNBA. She also averaged 24.4 points per game in August, the highest-scoring month by a point guard in league history, the league said.
The WNBA last month convened a task force of team presidents and general managers to discuss several topics, including transgender athletes, and did not adopt eligibility rules, the league said in a statement. “Today’s meeting covered a wide range of topics, including ongoing discussions on transgender athletes and the continued hate and vitriol directed at players online,” the WNBA said. “We will continue to engage all league stakeholders in the coming weeks and months. We will approach these important conversations thoughtfully and in alignment with the values of our league. There are no immediate eligibility matters affecting the WNBA and we strongly denounce the bad-faith efforts to use these topics to demean or marginalize others.”
