Ex-husband testifies many prescribed pills went unused in Lindsay Clancy case

Prosecutors on Monday sought to undercut the defense’s portrayal of Lindsay Clancy as overmedicated by showing jurors nine prescription bottles that still contained pills, court testimony shows.

Patrick Clancy testified that his ex-wife had been prescribed numerous psychiatric medications in the months before the deaths of their three children, but he acknowledged under questioning from Assistant District Attorney Shanan Buckingham that several prescriptions had been only partly used.

Buckingham held up a bag of prescription medications and asked, “So there were a lot of pills prescribed, but not a lot of pills taken. Correct?” Patrick Clancy said it was “possible that not a lot were taken” and estimated that Lindsay Clancy had been taking three or four medications at most at any one time.

Former federal prosecutor Neama Rahmani told Fox News Digital that the questioning appeared designed to blunt a defense argument that a cocktail of changing medications caused psychosis. “The prosecution wants to get out ahead of that potentially bad evidence,” Rahmani said, adding prosecutors will likely focus on how long Clancy was on each drug and whether she was taking them simultaneously.

The defense has said Clancy was suffering from psychosis and not criminally responsible when authorities say she strangled her children — Cora, 5; Dawson, 3; and Callan, an 8-month-old — inside the family’s Duxbury home in January 2023. Prosecutors have portrayed the killings as deliberate. During opening statements, defense attorney Kevin Reddington conceded that Clancy killed the children but said the key dispute is what was happening in her mind. Clancy has pleaded not guilty to three counts each of murder and strangulation. Judge William Sullivan told jurors the Commonwealth must prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Clancy was criminally responsible when the children were killed.
