A juror in the trial of Massachusetts mother Lindsay Clancy said the panel viewed the case as a chance to “make it better for other women” and families, a stance Fox News reported that a legal analyst called “problematic.”
Fox News identified the juror as Paula Devlin, 65, and reported that Devlin told CBS Saturday Morning the jury saw the case as a turning point that could change things for other families.
Devlin, one of the 11 jurors who wanted to find Clancy not criminally responsible, told Fox News the jury reached an 11-1 deadlock that led to a mistrial. Devlin said the jury had been split eight in favor of finding Clancy not criminally responsible, two undecided, and one holdout with one other juror leaning toward a guilty verdict, Fox News reported.
Los Angeles trial attorney and legal analyst Neama Rahmani told Fox News Digital he considered Devlin’s statement “problematic,” saying jurors should decide cases solely on the facts and the law rather than the possible impact of their decision on other people or cases.
Fox News reported that Judge Sullivan declared a mistrial after the jury deadlocked 11-1. The outlet also reported claims from jurors and Clancy’s defense attorney, Kevin Reddington, that the holdout juror did not share evidence he believed supported a guilty verdict.
Fox News said a GiveSendGo fundraiser for the holdout juror has raised more than $115,000, which the organizer said was intended to cover “security, lawyers [and] lost work.” Separately, Fox News reported that TMZ published a photograph of Lindsay Clancy’s husband, Patrick Clancy, with his new wife, Rachel Danis, in the Hamptons.
Fox News noted that Lindsay Clancy has been accused of three counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of her children Cora, 5; Dawson, 3; and Callan, 8 months. The report said her defense did not dispute that she killed the children with exercise bands but argued she was not criminally responsible due to postpartum psychosis.
