Human remains found in chimney at Queens school, police say
Human remains were found Tuesday morning inside a chimney at P.S./I.S. 113 Anthony J. Pranzo in Queens, New York, according to police. The discovery occurred around 8:45 a.m. as officials investigated reports of a foul odor at the school.
The school, which had closed for the summer Friday and was undergoing construction, was empty at the time. Contractors had been working on wiring and heating over the past few days, police said. Authorities are working to confirm whether all workers have been accounted for.
The city’s medical examiner removed the remains and is working to determine the cause of death. It is unclear how long the remains had been in the chimney or how they got there, police said. Officials have yet to identify the deceased individual.
The Department of Education called the discovery “deeply upsetting and concerning.” No students or staff were present during the find, and the investigation remains ongoing, police added.
