At Target Center, Minnesota Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve voiced support for the transgender community after the Lynx closed the regular season with an 86-66 victory over the Indiana Fever, Fox News reported.
Fox News reported that Reeve addressed the issue following the regular-season finale and that competing rallies over trans athletes in women’s sports took place outside the game for the third time this season.
The outlet said Reeve has raised transgender issues during WNBA media sessions at least four times this season. Reeve told reporters the gesture of wearing a “Trans Kids Belong” T‑shirt during a previous home game was meaningful to many people; she called wearing the shirt a “small gesture,” Fox News reported.
Fox News also reported that Reeve first addressed the subject after the U.S. Supreme Court rulings upholding state laws restricting transgender participation in women’s sports, and that similar outside rallies were held during the Lynx’s Aug. 2 game against Indiana and an Aug. 19 game against the Golden State Valkyries.
The Lynx finished the regular season with a league-best 33-11 record, and Fox News said Indiana fell to 28-16 and entered the playoffs as the No. 6 seed.
Fox News wrote that the WNBA convened discussions with team leaders during the season, and that the league said there were no immediate transgender eligibility matters affecting the WNBA while affirming fairness, competitive integrity and inclusion as priorities; the outlet noted no transgender woman has played in the league.
