U.S. men’s national team scores second-fastest World Cup goal in group finale against Turkey

The U.S. men’s national team opened its World Cup group-stage finale with a quick goal, as Auston Trusty scored his first international goal three minutes into Thursday’s match against Turkey at Los Angeles Stadium. The goal was the second-fastest the United States has scored from the opening kickoff in World Cup history, according to sources.

The Americans aimed for a third straight win after defeating Paraguay 4-1 and shutting out Australia 2-0 in previous matches. Christian Pulisic was available as a substitute after recovering from a left calf injury sustained June 10, but he did not start the game, which was broadcast on FOX.

However, the U.S. lead was short-lived. Arda Güler scored for Turkey in the 10th minute, and Orkun Kökçü added another in the 31st to give Turkey a 2-1 advantage in the first half. The match was scheduled for Thursday at 10 p.m. ET in Inglewood, California. It was available on FOX and FOX Sports, and updates are expected as the story develops.
