Mamdani’s endorsed candidates win big in New York primaries

Zohran Mamdani, a Democratic socialist, saw his political bets pay off in Tuesday’s New York City House primaries. All three candidates he backed secured victories, according to reports.

Claire Valdez and Darializa Avila Chevalier, both endorsed by Mamdani, won their races comfortably. Avila Chevalier notably defeated incumbent Rep. Adriano Espaillat, marking a significant upset.

Additionally, former mayoral candidate Brad Lander, another Mamdani supporter, defeated Rep. Dan Goldman in their primary race. Lander’s victory highlighted the influence of Mamdani’s endorsements among progressive voters.

The wins put Mamdani at odds with some established Democratic figures and underscore a shift toward more progressive candidates in New York’s primaries, sources said.
