Michigan ruling removes Larry Nassar from state sex offender registry
Larry Nassar has been removed from the Michigan Sex Offender Registry after a state Supreme Court ruling, the Eaton County Prosecutor’s Office confirmed.
The removal follows the Michigan Supreme Court’s Sept. 9, 2026, decision that 2021 amendments to the state’s Sex Offender Registration Act cannot be applied retroactively, Fox News reported. As a result, state police removed individuals whose criminal conduct occurred before a July 1, 2011, cutoff; Fox News said Nassar was among more than 20,000 names recently purged from the Michigan State Police database.
The Eaton County Prosecutor’s Office criticized the change. Eaton County Prosecutor Doug Lloyd said the conduct in Nassar’s cases fell before the 2011 cutoff even though his convictions came later, and the office said the Supreme Court could have interpreted the law differently to keep certain offenders on the public list.
Nassar served as a team physician for USA Gymnastics until 2014 and for Michigan State University until 2016. The investigation into his conduct intensified after Rachael Denhollander publicly accused him in September 2016. Dozens of victims testified at his January 2018 sentencing, and Ingham County Circuit Court Judge Rosemarie Aquilina described him as “possibly the most prolific serial child sex abuser in history.”
Fox News reported that authorities say there is no new public threat from the registry removal because Nassar is serving multiple lengthy prison sentences on state sexual assault convictions and federal child pornography charges, and officials note it is highly unlikely he will be released before his death.
