Minnesota GOP chair condemns protesters displaying KKK-themed sign during House speaker’s remarks

Minnesota’s Republican Party chairman, Alex Plechash, accused protesters of racial intimidation after demonstrators disrupted the Lincoln Reagan Dinner in Eagan on Friday night. The protesters held a sign reading “RepubliKKKan Party” during remarks by House Speaker and Republican gubernatorial candidate Lisa Demuth.

Plechash stated that the protesters aimed a symbol of racial terror at a Black woman leader, referencing the dinner named for the president who ended slavery. The Sunrise Movement Twin Cities, a progressive activist organization, claimed responsibility for the disruption, citing opposition to Republican policies they believe harm immigrants and marginalized communities. The group emphasized it was not affiliated with Minnesota’s Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party.

Video footage shows protesters approaching the stage with signs, including one with “KKK” highlighted in red. One protester shouted, “You love Trump and you will not stand up for Minnesotans,” as Demuth held a microphone on stage. Security escorted the demonstrators away amid chants of “Lisa” and “USA” from attendees.

Plechash noted that the protesters gained access by purchasing tickets and passing security checkpoints. He described two disruptions during the event, lasting about 30 seconds each, and said the protesters did not pose a physical threat. Eagan police issued trespass orders, and charges are under investigation.

Plechash criticized Minnesota Democrats, including Sen. Amy Klobuchar and Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan, for their silence on the incident, stating, “Every hour they stay silent says something.” Demuth, who won the Republican primary for governor in August, will face Democrat Klobuchar in the November election to succeed Gov. Tim Walz.
