Speaker Mike Johnson projected to win fifth House term in Louisiana’s 4th District

The Associated Press projects House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., will win nearly 60% of the vote and a fifth term in the U.S. House of Representatives, a result that the AP says guarantees his return to Congress in January.

Fox News reported that Johnson faced four other declared candidates in the race and that Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry postponed this year’s primaries to give the state legislature more time to redraw the congressional map.

The Fox News account said the state’s modified schedule sends the top two finishers in each of Louisiana’s six House districts to an early December runoff unless a candidate tops 50% of the vote outright.

Fox News also reported that the 4th Congressional District, anchored by Shreveport and Bossier City in northwestern Louisiana, is rated R-26 by the Cook Political Report and is considered safe Republican territory.

The Fox News article noted a recent Supreme Court ruling allowed Louisiana to redraw its map in a way that effectively dissolved the state’s one Black-majority district, and that the GOP-controlled legislature used the redistricting process this year.

On Johnson’s role in House leadership, Fox News said that if Republicans maintain their majority nationwide, he is all but assured of remaining Speaker; if Republicans lose the majority, the outlet reported he would likely face pressure from fellow House Republicans to step aside. In that latter scenario, Fox News said it is widely believed House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, would face House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., for the minority leader post.
