Patrick Mahomes scored on a 15-yard run to cap the Kansas City Chiefs’ first offensive drive of the season against the Denver Broncos, a play Fox News said marked his return after a serious left-knee injury.
Fox News reported Mahomes tore both the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and lateral collateral ligament (LCL) in his left knee on Dec. 14, 2025, underwent surgery in Dallas the next day and began rehabilitation almost immediately. The outlet said he was cleared to return without restrictions for the season opener.
The report said Mahomes is wearing a lightweight brace on his left knee but has said it does not deter him from moving as he did before surgery, and he expects to shed the brace perhaps as early as late in this season.
Fox News also reported Mahomes did not play in the preseason, avoided contact in organized team activities and training camp, and that being hit in the opener removed a psychological obstacle described in the coverage.
The story said Mahomes committed to an intensive recovery program that included roughly seven hours per day of rehabilitation and strength work, and that he stayed in Kansas City to work with the Chiefs’ medical and training staff during his recovery.
