Dr. Idris Evans, 46, was stabbed to death at his home in Edgewood, Pennsylvania, and his wife was critically injured early Thursday, the Allegheny County Police Department told Fox News Digital.
County 9-1-1 received a report of a stabbing in the 100 block of Linden Avenue at 12:31 a.m., police said. First responders found Evans and his wife suffering from multiple stab wounds; Evans was pronounced dead at an area hospital, and his wife was taken to a hospital in critical but stable condition, Fox News Digital reported.
Police identified 32-year-old Elijah Hemingway of Pittsburgh as the suspect. Detectives determined through witness interviews that Hemingway allegedly entered the home and attacked the couple while they were sleeping, according to police.
Court documents obtained by KDKA and cited by Fox News Digital say Evans’ wife told investigators the couple awoke to a man attacking them in bed with a kitchen knife, that the attacker was wearing only underwear and uttered something about “being God,” and that Evans called the attacker “Elijah.” Allegheny County Assistant Superintendent Victor Joseph told KDKA investigators did not yet know if the men had a pre-existing relationship.
A Monroeville Police Department K-9 unit found Hemingway behind a nearby home with cuts to his hand, county police said. Hemingway remained hospitalized pending transfer to the Allegheny County Jail, police told Fox News Digital.
Hemingway faces charges that include criminal homicide, aggravated assault, burglary and criminal trespass, police said. Investigators have not announced a motive or whether the two men knew each other, Fox News Digital reported.
Evans was medical director of the Pediatric Critical Care Transport Team at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and an assistant professor of critical care medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, according to his university profile. A UPMC spokesperson told Fox News Digital the hospital and university community is “deeply saddened” and asked that the family’s privacy be respected.
