Dog triggers shotgun in truck at Scottsbluff gas station; woman injured yards away, police say

A dog inside a truck accidentally discharged a shotgun during a stop at a Scottsbluff gas station Saturday, sending a blast through the vehicle and injuring a woman several yards away, the Scottsbluff Police Department said.

The incident occurred shortly after noon at Short Stop, 2002 Avenue I, KNOP reported, citing the police department. The owner stepped into the convenience store and left the dog in the vehicle. Another passenger stepped outside and remained near the front passenger-side door, the outlet said.

Police said the dog moved in the rear-seat area and came into contact with a shotgun stored in the vehicle. The firearm appeared to have a live round in the chamber and discharged after being triggered, authorities told KNOP.

The blast passed through the truck’s front passenger-side door, traveled out of the parking lot and struck a woman who was stopped at a nearby traffic light several yards away, the police department said. A shotgun pellet hit the upper portion of her right arm, which was resting out the window. Her injuries were not considered life-threatening, and a family member transported her to Regional West Medical Center, KNOP reported. No other injuries were reported.

Officers initially were told the incident involved a BB gun but were later informed it involved a shotgun, and investigators noted damage to the passenger-side door consistent with a shotgun blast, KNOP said. The Scottsbluff Police Department said it will continue to investigate. Fox News Digital contacted the department for additional comment.
