Plainfield police seize 650 toilet paper rolls after homecoming prank complaints

Plainfield police said they seized 650 rolls of toilet paper and displayed them under an “Operation Clean Sweep” banner after receiving multiple complaints about homecoming prank activity near Plainfield North High School.

“And yes… 650 rolls. We counted,” the department wrote on Facebook, jokingly estimating a “street value” of $1,708.66 after two nights of escalating calls from the surrounding community, the post said.

Officers reported receiving double-digit calls for service on both Monday and Tuesday during a roughly two-hour period beginning shortly after 7 p.m. Residents told police homes and vehicles were targeted with toilet paper, eggs, ketchup, detergent pods and other items, the department said.

Police said groups of about 20 to 25 people wearing hoodies and ski masks would arrive in several vehicles and “cause chaos.” The department said some targeted homes belonged to families with small children or to residents with no children at all, and that the incidents caused property damage and significant cleanup.

The department warned that the homecoming calls were diverting officers from more serious incidents, including assisting firefighters at a structure fire, helping Illinois State Police, making a DUI arrest and responding to crashes, intoxicated people, violations of protection orders and a family mental health crisis.

The department said it had laid out a “zero-tolerance approach” ahead of homecoming week and urged parents to speak with their children. “Homecoming is not a free pass to damage someone else’s property or disrupt their quality of life,” the department wrote on Facebook.

The police post did not say where officers found the toilet paper, whether any arrests were made or whether charges had been filed in connection with the reported damage.
