Russell Wilson reportedly interviewed for NC State head-coaching job
Russell Wilson reportedly interviewed for the open NC State head-coaching position, a development tied to the Wolfpack program after coach Dave Doeren was fired on Oct. 24 following a 3-4 start.
Fox News reported on Nov. 4, 2026, that NFL insider Adam Schefter said Wilson, 37, interviewed for the job and that athletic director Boo Corrigan is reportedly targeting Wilson and former NFL quarterback Philip Rivers in the search.
The report notes Wilson retired from the NFL in June 2026 after 14 seasons, 10 Pro Bowl selections and a Super Bowl title, and has since worked in a CBS studio role. Fox News said Wilson has never coached a single snap at any level.
Fox News also reported that Rivers, 44, has spent the past six seasons coaching St. Michael Catholic High School in Alabama to consecutive state semifinal appearances and has told NC State he wants to finish his high school season first, according to the report.
The outlet said Wilson played at NC State from 2008 through 2010 before transferring to Wisconsin, accounting for 93 total touchdowns during his time in Raleigh. In the NFL, the report noted, Wilson compiled nearly 47,000 career passing yards, 353 touchdown passes, a Super Bowl ring and a Walter Payton Man of the Year award.
Fox News characterized the pursuit of Wilson as a strategy likely to draw national attention and booster support while acknowledging the risks of hiring a first-time head coach, per the report.
