Russian forces launched a missile attack on Kyiv on Tuesday, targeting residential areas and causing fires across the city, Ukrainian officials said. The attack involved ballistic and cruise missiles, and residents were urged to stay indoors, according to CNN.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that people remained trapped inside a residential building following the strikes. The attack came hours after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned of a major strike, and just days after U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner visited Kyiv to support peace negotiations.
Witkoff and Kushner met with Ukrainian officials in Kyiv on Sunday and with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Saturday. Witkoff said the parties had agreed to a three-day ceasefire before their visits, which ended Tuesday. The ceasefire followed months of stalled peace talks, and no new agreement has been announced.
Following the visit, Witkoff stated that progress was made, including scheduling additional trilateral talks. He also said President Donald Trump is working toward ending the conflict and achieving lasting peace, according to a post on X, formerly Twitter.
Earlier Tuesday, the governor of Saratov, Russia, reported that a Ukrainian drone struck civilian infrastructure, injuring some people. Ukrainian officials said Ukrainian drones also attacked three Russian oil refineries on Monday, and Russia has conducted multiple attacks across Ukraine, killing and wounding civilians in recent days.
