Trump-backed candidate loses in Tennessee primary

Voters in Tennessee rejected Republican Rep. Andy Ogles in Thursday’s primary, dealing former President Donald Trump a rare defeat. Ogles faced a strong challenge from Charlie Hatcher, a former state agriculture commissioner endorsed by outgoing Gov. Bill Lee.

Hatcher’s victory is seen as a setback for Trump’s influence in the state. While Trump’s endorsements have largely been successful this cycle, this loss highlights some challenges for his preferred candidates.

Thursday’s primaries also marked the first elections with new voting procedures implemented in some districts, according to election officials. The results are expected to influence the upcoming general election campaigns in Tennessee and beyond.
