Trump-backed Hassan loses Michigan GOP primary to withdrawn rival Thomas Smith
Decision Desk HQ projected that Republican Thomas Smith defeated Amir Hassan in the GOP primary for Michigan’s 8th Congressional District, denying the Trump-backed candidate the nomination.
Smith is a retired engineer who had withdrawn from the race, Decision Desk HQ said.
Hassan is a former federal law enforcement officer who had received the backing of President Donald Trump, according to the campaign information released earlier.
The primary was to determine the Republican nominee to challenge first-term Rep. Kristen McDonald Rivet, D-Mich.
