Hardeman County Election Day: District 80 Seat Up for Grabs
Hardeman County Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3, and voters in Middleton, Bolivar and the rest of the county will help decide an open seat in the Tennessee House for the first time in a quarter century. Early voting ended Thursday, Oct. 29, so anyone who has not voted yet will need to go to their assigned precinct on Tuesday.
Polls Open 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. for Hardeman County Election Day
Polling places in Hardeman County will be open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Central time on Tuesday, according to the Hardeman County Election Commission information published by the Hatchie Press. On Election Day, voters must cast their ballots at their own precinct, not at the election commission office where early voting was held.
Tennessee now prints a paper ballot for each voter. Voters mark their choices with a blue or black ink pen and then feed the ballot into a scanner, which records the votes.

What’s on the Hardeman County Ballot
Depending on where they live, Hardeman County voters will see some or all of these contests:
- Governor of Tennessee
- Proposed amendments to the Tennessee Constitution
- U.S. Senate
- U.S. House of Representatives, District 9
- Tennessee House of Representatives, Districts 80 and 94
- Municipal elections in Grand Junction and Hickory Valley
Which state House race appears on a ballot depends on the voter’s precinct, because Hardeman County is split between District 80 and District 94. A sample ballot is available from the election commission.
Open Seat in Tennessee House District 80
The most closely watched local race is for House District 80. Longtime Democratic Rep. Johnny Shaw, who has held the seat since 2000, is retiring, according to the Tennessee Lookout voter guide. The district takes in portions of Hardeman, Haywood and Madison counties, including Bolivar, Brownsville and part of Jackson.
Two candidates are on the ballot:
- Andrea Bond Johnson (Democrat) holds an MBA from the University of Tennessee and works as an investment adviser representative, according to Tennessee Lookout. She ran for the legislature in 2018 and 2020.
- Julian McTizic (Republican) is the mayor of Bolivar and a past president of the Tennessee Municipal League.
The two candidates recently took part in a televised candidate forum that is available online for voters who want to hear their positions before Tuesday. State House members serve two-year terms.
