Tippah County Sports Gameday for Thursday, Jan. 19

Only a few county schools are hosting high school competition today, but if you’re a fan of Ripley Powerlifting or Blue Mountain/Walnut Basketball, you’re in luck:

POWERLIFTING:

The Lady Tiger Invitational kicks off inside the Ripley Middle School Gym (Old RHS gym) around 2 p.m. Several girls’ powerlifting teams will be in competition. If you’ve never been to a powerlifting meet or if weightlifting is a hobby and you have some time, check it out. Athletes will compete against each other in the bench press, squat and deadlift.

HS BASKETBALL

Hickory Flat at Blue Mountain. Girls at 6 p.m. Boys at 7:30.

–The Lady Cougars (15-4, 6-0) hold the top spot in Region 3-1A. With a win over the Lady Rebels (18-7, 6-1), Blue Mountain will lock up the region tournament’s No. 1 seed for the second year in a row. The Lady Cougars have become the unquestioned Queens of 3-1A, having won 14 in a row dating back to last season. One of those wins includes a 49-26 road win over Hickory Flat on Dec. 9.

–The Cougars (11-8, 4-2) snapped a four-game losing streak with a pair of Region 3-1A wins over Ashland and Coldwater, last week. They can keep a firm hold on the No. 2 spot with a win over Hickory Flat (9-16, 2-5). In their first meeting, Blue Moutain won at Hickory Flat, 59-42.

Baldwyn at Walnut. Girls tip at 6 p.m. Boys at 7:30.

-The Lady Wildcats (12-7, 1-1 in Region 1-2A) are 4-1 over their last five games. The 2023 Tippah County Tournament champs host the Lady Bearcats (8-4, 0-1). The Lady Wildcats need a win to stay on pace for one of the top seeds in next week’s Region 1-2A Tournament.

–The Wildcats (6-13, 0-2) have a tall task on their hands with the Bearcats (15-3, 1-1). There is some separation between the two teams in overall records, but in region play, not so much. The Wildcats can move up the 3-1A food chain with a lot of games to play before the region tournament begins.
