Ripley Moves to Class 3A in MHSAA 2027-29 Reclassification

Ripley High School is heading to a new classification. The Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) released its 2027-29 reclassification numbers on Monday, Oct. 26, and the list puts Ripley in Class 3A starting with the 2027-28 school year. After 13 seasons in Class 4A, the Tigers will be the biggest school in their new class.

The MHSAA redraws its classes every two years based on school enrollment. The new alignment covers the 2027-28 and 2028-29 athletic seasons, so this year’s teams and the 2026-27 seasons are not affected.

Why Ripley Drops to Class 3A

Ripley’s enrollment figure came in at 303 students. Under the new cutoffs, Class 4A begins at 306 and Class 3A begins at 204. That left the Tigers just three students short of staying in 4A.

  • Ripley: 303 students, moving from 4A to 3A and becoming the largest 3A school
  • Mooreville: 306 students, the smallest school in 4A
  • Booneville: 308 students, moving up from 3A to 4A

Booneville and Ripley are effectively trading places, which will reshape the region schedules for several Northeast Mississippi programs once the new districts are drawn.

North Tippah Also Listed in 3A

North Tippah High School in Walnut is also listed in Class 3A for the 2027-29 cycle, with 226 students, according to the classification lists published after the MHSAA release. The Southern Sentinel reported that both Ripley and North Tippah will compete in 3A beginning in 2027-28, which would put the two Tippah County schools in the same classification.

Where Other Local Schools Landed

Several schools in Tippah and Benton counties stay in Class 1A, which grew from 35 schools to 48 under the new numbers:

  • Pine Grove: 135 students, Class 1A. That is one student below the 136-student line for Class 2A, which makes the Panthers one of the largest 1A schools in the state.
  • Ashland: 108 students, Class 1A
  • Hickory Flat: 83 students, Class 1A
  • Blue Mountain: 52 students, Class 1A

Statewide, more schools moved down a class than moved up. Most schools reported lower enrollment than in the last cycle. Tupelo remains the largest school in Mississippi.

What Happens Next

The enrollment numbers set each school’s class, but the MHSAA still has to assign schools to regions and districts within each class. Those alignments will decide who Ripley, North Tippah and the other local teams play for playoff seeding beginning in fall 2027. Fans can expect more details once the association finalizes the new regions.

For now, Ripley’s fall teams are still competing in 4A. The Tigers’ golf team just won the 2026 MHSAA Class 4A state title, one of the last championships the program can win in that class.
