Northeast Mississippi Community College said it held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the William J. “Billy” McCoy Mississippi Heritage Room at the school’s campus.
The college said McCoy began as a scholarship student at Northeast and went on to serve as speaker of the Mississippi House of Representatives, a public life the college described as defined by service to education, the state and local communities.
According to the college, the Heritage Room will display items from McCoy’s 32 years of legislative service and provide information on decisions that helped shape Mississippi, with the goal of showing the impact a Northeast graduate can have beyond campus.
The college said the ribbon-cutting was intended as a celebration of McCoy’s legacy and as a way to ensure his story continues to be told to future generations of Northeast “Tigers.”
