Mississippi to award $15 million in outdoor conservation grants
Jackson, Miss. — Governor Tate Reeves announced the start of the fifth grant application cycle for the Mississippi Outdoor Stewardship Trust Fund on Tuesday. The program, supported by $15 million allocated during the 2026 legislative session, aims to fund conservation and outdoor recreation initiatives.
The Mississippi Outdoor Stewardship Trust Fund Board of Trustees will begin accepting applications on August 3, 2026. Since its creation in 2022, the fund has awarded more than $50.2 million to 100 projects statewide. These projects have attracted over $50 million in matching funds, totaling more than $100.2 million in investments, according to officials.
Governor Reeves highlighted the program’s role in preserving Mississippi’s natural beauty. “Mississippi is one of the most beautiful places in America, and I am proud of the work we’ve done to preserve our outdoors for future generations,” he said. The governor also emphasized the program’s focus on attracting non-state funds, stimulating economic growth, and creating jobs.
The fund provides competitive grants to state agencies, counties, municipalities, and nonprofits for projects that conserve natural resources and expand outdoor recreation. A key goal is leveraging federal and private matching funds to maximize impact, officials said.
Ed Penny, president of the Mississippi Outdoor Stewardship Coalition, praised the program’s growth. “MOSTF has become a vital source of funding for conservation and recreation efforts,” Penny said. “It’s rewarding to see the vision we set nearly a decade ago come to life, and we look forward to continued progress.”
Ricky Flynt, executive director of MOSTF, encouraged eligible organizations to apply. He noted that the program offers workshops to assist applicants and recommended reviewing application materials on the fund’s website. The deadline to submit applications is September 18, 2026. Funding requests for land acquisition projects are not eligible during this cycle.
