BMCU says Emergency Retention Fund keeps students enrolled

BMCU said its Emergency Retention Fund helps students cover sudden expenses so they can stay enrolled and focus on learning.

The organization described a student whose family income placed her just above the cutoff for Pell Grants and other need-based aid. On paper, she did not qualify for assistance, BMCU said, but her family still struggled to afford the cost of college.

BMCU said the student risked losing her chance at higher education without additional support. The fund provided aid that allowed her to remain in school, the organization said.

As a result, BMCU said, the student has been able to continue her spiritual and academic growth with less worry. The group said education should be about learning, not worrying how to cover sudden expenses.
