A powerful bow echo that moved through the Mid-South on Aug. 22 produced widespread straight-line winds estimated at 60 to 80 mph, meteorologists said. The winds toppled trees and snapped power lines from Memphis to Holly Springs, Mississippi, authorities said.
Shelby County officials reported more than 120,000 customers lost power. Emergency officials said extensive tree damage, downed power lines and road closures were being reported across the region.
Officials said a multi-day recovery effort is expected as crews work to clear debris and restore service. Officials urged residents to exercise extreme caution during cleanup and to avoid downed power lines.
Local authorities asked residents to monitor official channels for updates on outages and road conditions, officials said.
