Mississippi Legislature passes law criminalizing illegal immigration
The Mississippi Legislature has passed a law that makes illegal immigration a state crime, State Auditor Shad White said. The measure takes effect July 1.
White said his office and team traveled across the state to advocate for the bill. He called the legislation a top priority for his office last year.
White’s office said its review found Mississippi taxpayers spend more than $100 million a year on costs associated with illegal immigration.
White said the new law will help ensure that tax dollars go to Mississippi citizens instead of illegal immigrants, according to his office.
