MDOT warns motorists in south, central Mississippi as Tropical Storm Arthur nears

The Mississippi Department of Transportation warned motorists in south and central Mississippi that Tropical Storm Arthur is moving closer and will likely bring several inches of rain and cause flash flooding, the agency said.

MDOT urged drivers to check the free MDOT traffic app or MDOTtraffic.com before driving for updates on road conditions. The agency advised motorists to avoid already flooded areas, saying a flowing stream can carry a vehicle downstream.

MDOT listed safety tips including never driving through flooded areas — “TURN AROUND, DON’T DROWN™” — not using cruise control on wet roads, using headlights when windshield wipers are in use, being especially cautious at night and never driving around barricades, the agency said.

The agency also told drivers that if a vehicle stalls they should abandon it immediately and seek higher ground because rising water can engulf a vehicle. MDOT urged residents to follow the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency for important emergency communications.
