Review: Mississippi spending on travel, vehicles and fuel climbs to about $25 million a year

A review of state spending records shows Mississippi’s government spending on travel, vehicles and fuel has climbed to roughly $25 million a year, outpacing similar-sized states by millions of dollars, the review said.

The review said Mississippi’s spending exceeds that of comparable states such as Louisiana, Arkansas and Iowa by millions of dollars. It found spending in those categories has grown well beyond inflation since 2015.

The review also said purchases of new state vehicles have increased about sevenfold since 2015. The report did not include a detailed breakdown of spending by individual agencies in its summary.

The statement accompanying the review urged greater transparency, accountability and responsible stewardship of tax dollars, saying Mississippi taxpayers deserve those measures as household budgets tighten.
