Tupelo to Begin Enforcement of Kratom Ordinance Sept. 12

The Tupelo Police Department said enforcement of the city ordinance banning kratom and kratom products will begin at 10 a.m. Sept. 12.

The department issued the notice Sept. 10 and said the Tupelo City Council adopted the ordinance on Feb. 3, 2026. Enforcement was delayed while a legal challenge proceeded through the courts, the release said.

During the delay, businesses were allowed to continue selling kratom products, the department said. The release told businesses currently selling kratom to make preparations to comply with the ordinance.

Chief John Quaka said, “The City has allowed the legal process to run its course, and businesses have been permitted to continue selling these products during that time. We are providing businesses with 48 hours’ notice and an opportunity to come into compliance before enforcement begins. Our goal is voluntary compliance with the ordinance.”
