58th MHSAA Region 5 marching evaluation draws more than 30 high school bands to Gulfport

More than 30 high school marching bands from across the region performed Oct. 15, 2026, at Gulfport’s Milner Stadium for the Mississippi High School Activities Association’s 58th Region 5 State Marching Evaluation.

WXXV News 25 reported that the event showcased bands’ musical work, precision and teamwork as students presented competitive field performances.

Loyd Star Drum Major Pierson Jordan said, “We just work so hard! We had a few problems when we first started, but our directors helped us get where we need to be. We started at 30 players and we’ve almost doubled because we’re at 60 now. I’m just really happy we’ve made it this far and we get to perform.”

Loyd Star Band Director Sharon Laird said, “Band teaches you to be on time and work well with others, to have high character and have high standards. So, I want them to carry not only the musical knowledge but all the things that help make us wonderful human beings.”

WXXV reported the evaluation gave students an opportunity to gain experience, build confidence and take pride in their performances.
