AWS marks $1 billion investment to convert Clinton plant into data center

Amazon Web Services officially marked a $1 billion investment this week to convert the former Delphi manufacturing facility in Clinton into a data center, company and city officials said.

Representatives from the City of Clinton, the Hinds County Economic Development Authority, Hinds County, Entergy Mississippi and other regional partners attended the event, according to a news release.

“This is the largest economic development project in the history of Clinton,” Mayor Will Purdie said. He said the city is proud to welcome AWS and expects the investment to create opportunities for residents, schools and future generations.

“Today marks a defining moment for Hinds County and the entire Jackson metro region,” Hunter Gardner, executive director of the Hinds County Economic Development Authority, said. Gardner called the AWS project the largest private investment in Hinds County history and said it will bring jobs, tax revenue, workforce development and long-term economic momentum.

City officials said the Delphi facility had stood largely dormant for years and that repurposing it will accelerate the project timeline, leading to faster construction activity and earlier job creation. Amazon has pledged to be water positive by 2030 and, company officials said, has partnered with state and local leaders to expand workforce development in Mississippi through STEM education, fiber-optic training, technical certifications and pre-apprenticeship programs. “Were proud to bring high-skilled jobs, workforce programs, and long-term investment to this community,” Roger Wehner, vice president of economic development at Amazon Web Services, said.
