Hinds County leaders say detention center faces overcrowding, staffing shortages
HINDS COUNTY, Miss. — Hinds County officials returned to federal court on July 10, 2026, to discuss findings from a federal receiver overseeing the Hinds County Detention Center, county leaders said.
Officials told the court that overcrowding, staffing shortages and facility issues remain a problem at the detention center, according to statements from county leaders.
The court appearance came months after a federal receiver was appointed to take over operations at the facility, officials said. The hearing focused on the receiver’s findings, county leaders added.
County officials said the problems highlighted by the receiver persist despite the takeover, but provided no additional details at the July 10 session, according to those officials.
