Hurricane Isaias nears Category 3; Jackson County under hurricane warning
Hurricane Isaias strengthened to a Category 2 storm with 110 mph maximum sustained winds and could reach Category 3 before making landfall along the Alabama-Florida line late Oct. 9 into Oct. 10, with Jackson County under a hurricane warning.
Magnolia Tribune reported the forecast and current storm details on Oct. 9, noting the storm was moving NNE at about 15 mph and that one more mile-per-hour increase in sustained winds would raise Isaias to Category 3 status.
The Tribune said other areas along the Mississippi Coast and inland were under Tropical Storm Warnings and Tropical Storm Watches. East Mississippi near the Mississippi–Alabama line was expected to see tropical-storm‑force conditions through Saturday.
In other Mississippi news, Magnolia Tribune reported that Mississippi State University is a founding partner of a new Southeast Regional AI Computing Consortium announced by the White House at the Science: A New Golden Age Summit. Other founding partners listed include Auburn, Louisiana State and Vanderbilt universities and the universities of Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky and Tennessee Knoxville.
The Tribune quoted Scott Willard, MSU interim vice president for research and economic development, saying the consortium’s initiatives will advance the scientific frontier and fuel regional innovation. Magnolia Tribune also noted MSU is home to two top-ranked supercomputers and is a strategic partner of the Mississippi Cyber and Technology Center, which will house the MSU-led Mississippi Cyber Initiative.
Nationally, the New York Times reported that election forecasting suggests Democrats may make gains in the midterm contests but cautioned uncertainty and noted structural challenges for Democrats this cycle.
Politico reported that Sens. Chuck Grassley, Mike Lee and Susan Collins urged the DEA and FDA to consider scheduling the entire kratom plant, following renewed attention after recent criminal charges tied to suspected overdose deaths linked to kratom or synthetic kratom.
