The Medgar Evers Library in Jackson reopened Tuesday after months of closure caused by HVAC system problems. The Jackson/Hinds Library System announced the upgrade included installing a new heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system, according to vice chairman David Burks Jr.
The library, which had been closed for two months, hosted a back-to-school event featuring music, face painting, storytime, and various activities for children. At least 400 children from local daycare centers attended the celebration, which also included snacks and school supplies giveaways, organizers said.
Anne Sanders, the branch manager, expressed excitement about returning to regular programming. She said staff and volunteers, including retired nurse Idessa Chiplin, were eager to welcome the community back. Sanders noted the community’s enthusiasm, with many calling daily to ask about reopening plans.
The library’s hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. During the event, children enjoyed music, arts and crafts, a bounce house, a dance party, and interactive storytime, with food options including popcorn and hot dogs.
Organizers also highlighted plans for future programs. Timothy White of the Youth Outreach Company, which provides activities for at-risk youth, plans to bring groups of up to 50 children to the library’s after-school programs starting in September. White said the library will serve as a vital resource for tutoring and mentoring in the community.
