Mississippi politicians use Neshoba County Fair to campaign for higher office

The Neshoba County Fair, known for its horse racing and political speeches, became a stage for Mississippi politicians seeking higher office. Agriculture Commissioner Andy Gipson and Secretary of State Michael Watson, both Republicans, used the event to campaign for governor and lieutenant governor, respectively, as statewide elections approach in 2027.

Gipson, who has served as agriculture commissioner since 2018, announced his campaign for governor. He emphasized his background in farming, law, and legislation, and highlighted his faith, holding up a Bible during his speech. Gipson stated he would prioritize economic growth, domestic food production, and crime reduction if elected, citing recent shootings as a catalyst for his tough-on-crime stance. He also pledged to oppose data centers on farmland and support local farmers.

Gipson’s speech included calls for a return to Christian values and a focus on agriculture as the backbone of Mississippi’s economy. He pointed out that while the state seeks economic development, it must also ensure food security. His only announced opponent is former House Speaker Philip Gunn, though other potential candidates are being discussed.

Meanwhile, Watson, now completing his second term as secretary of state, announced his bid for lieutenant governor. He highlighted his accomplishments in election reform, deregulation, and anti-human trafficking efforts. Watson emphasized building a professional and accessible culture within his office as his top achievement. He plans to continue promoting business-friendly policies and deregulation to attract investment and support families in Mississippi.

Watson is the only candidate currently running for lieutenant governor, with Republican Shuwaski Young having announced his intention to run for secretary of state. Both candidates aim to strengthen their political profiles ahead of the 2027 elections, with the Neshoba County Fair serving as a prominent platform for their campaigns.
