Magnolia Tribune reported Oct. 12 that a Mississippi Valley State University basketball player, Qingfang Pang, remains in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement after his student visa expired.
The Tribune’s item cites WJTV reporting that Pang, a Chinese national who came to the United States to play junior-college basketball in New York before signing with MVSU, was detained when his student visa expired. WJTV, as reported by Magnolia Tribune, quoted attorney Marcus Session saying Pang was told to sign a voluntary removal order and that Pang said he did not know what he was signing and was not provided an interpreter.
WJTV told Magnolia Tribune that Session said Pang wants to return home and that Session has been in touch with Pang’s family about the case.
In sports news, Magnolia Tribune reported that Ole Miss remained No. 9 in this week’s AP Top 25 following a 52-17 win over Vanderbilt. The Tribune noted quarterback Trinidad Chambliss had four total touchdowns and the Rebels forced four turnovers. Ole Miss is 4-1 overall and 2-1 in SEC play and is scheduled to host No. 13 Missouri on Saturday, Oct. 17 at 2:30 p.m., the Tribune reported.
Magnolia Tribune also reported Mississippi State moved up to No. 16 in the AP Top 25 despite a bye week. The Bulldogs are listed 4-1 overall and 2-1 in SEC play and are scheduled to host Oklahoma, which the Tribune noted was coming off an upset of then-No. 1 Texas.
The Tribune reported Jackson State suffered its first loss of the season at Grambling, 45-38. Magnolia Tribune said freshman running back Li’Darius Pryor rushed for 166 yards and three touchdowns on 22 carries. Jackson State is reported to return home next weekend to face Florida A&M for homecoming.
