One Dead as Flooding Continues in Forrest County, Mississippi
One person has died in Forrest County as severe flooding persists across the area, according to Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves. Reeves confirmed the death on social media but did not provide additional details. He also urged residents to pray for the affected family and said the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency is working with local emergency officials to assist communities.
Earlier Monday, WDAM-TV reported that a body was found in Petal after an SUV became submerged near a local Walmart. Witnesses said the vehicle was swept away by strong currents, and bystanders attempted to help the woman inside. The SUV flipped before she could escape, authorities said. Floodwaters in Petal reportedly reached 12 feet before beginning to recede Monday afternoon.
The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood emergency for Petal and parts of Forrest County through 10 p.m. A flash flood warning also remains in effect for southeast Lamar County through the same time. Authorities warn that conditions remain dangerous, and warnings may be updated as needed.
