Reeves’ appointment of non-resident Hinds County prosecutor draws scrutiny
Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves’ appointment of Brad McCullouch to serve as Hinds County district attorney is sparking questions about residency and legal eligibility. State law requires district attorneys to reside within their counties, but McCullouch, a Madison County resident, was appointed to oversee the office until a Nov. 3 special election, according to sources.
McCullouch, an assistant district attorney in Hinds County since 2023, was appointed after Jody Owens resigned in June following a federal bribery guilty plea. McCullouch, a white man who previously ran for district attorney in Texas, is set to oversee the office during a period of increased criminal indictments in the historically Black county.
