Thompson compares Supreme Court ruling to a second Civil War
Mississippi Congressman Bennie Thompson has compared the recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Louisiana v. Callais to a second Civil War. Thompson made the remark during an appearance on Al Sharpton’s MS NOW “Politics Nation” this week.
The court’s 6-3 decision last week declared racial gerrymandering unconstitutional under Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, a move that could significantly impact redistricting efforts in southern states like Mississippi. The ruling requires proof of intentional racial discrimination in district maps, raising the bar for legal challenges.
Thompson, a Democrat with more than 30 years in Congress, told Sharpton that under previous interpretations of the Voting Rights Act, black communities were able to be consolidated into districts that increased their political influence. He expressed concern that the new ruling would hinder efforts to promote Black representation and influence in elections.
He called on the Black community to resist what he termed an unjust system and emphasized the importance of fighting at every election. Thompson also warned that his congressional seat could be at risk amid ongoing redistricting debates in Mississippi.
Meanwhile, many Republicans and state leaders are urging Mississippi’s governor and legislature to address redistricting during an upcoming special session. Some critics caution that legal challenges could complicate efforts, especially since primary elections have already taken place. Thompson concluded by stressing the importance of continued activism, quoting South African sentiments: “a luta continua,” meaning “the struggle continues.”
