Belichick’s UNC falls 38-35 to No. 1 Miami in Chapel Hill
No. 1 Miami remained unbeaten with a 38-35 victory over UNC in Chapel Hill, and the loss dropped Bill Belichick’s Tar Heels to 4-4, Fox News reported.
Fox News reported on Nov. 1, 2026, that Miami improved to 8-0 overall and 6-0 in ACC play while UNC fell to 4-4.
UNC quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. completed 28 of 34 passes for 341 yards and four touchdowns, including a 16-yard pass to Jordan Shipp that gave the Tar Heels a 21-17 lead in the third quarter, Fox News reported.
Miami quarterback Darian Mensah threw for 274 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 36 yards, according to Fox News. Miami answered several of UNC’s scores with long drives, including an 80-yard drive that put the Hurricanes up 24-21 in the third quarter and a series late in the fourth.
The decisive swing came when Marquise Lightfoot strip-sacked Edwards, with Miami recovering at the UNC 37-yard line, Fox News reported. The Hurricanes turned that turnover into a nine-yard touchdown pass to Malachi Toney and a 10-point lead with 2:33 remaining.
UNC scored on the next possession — Edwards’ fourth touchdown of the game with 1:38 left — and recovered an onside kick before an offsides penalty negated the play, Fox News reported. A second recovery was also nullified by a penalty for hitting the Miami player attempting the recovery; Miami regained the ball on the third try and ran out the clock.
Fox News reported individual receiving stats: Toney had seven receptions for 75 yards and two touchdowns. The report also said Mark Fletcher Jr. scored three total touchdowns for Miami.
