The U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights announced Monday it is opening a Title IX investigation into Smith College, a private all-women’s institution in Massachusetts.
The department cited concerns over the college’s admission of transgender women and its policies granting them access to women-only spaces. The investigation aims to determine whether the college’s practices comply with federal civil rights laws, according to a department release.
Smith College has not publicly commented on the investigation. The department’s move follows broader debates over gender identity and access to gender-specific facilities at educational institutions nationwide.
