Texas AG Paxton launches investigation into SPLC over funding allegations

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announced Monday that his office has opened an investigation into the Southern Poverty Law Center over allegations that the nonprofit funded extremist groups it publicly opposes.

The Southern Poverty Law Center faces a federal grand jury indictment in Montgomery, Alabama, on six counts of wire fraud, four counts of bank fraud, and one count of conspiracy, according to court records. The charges stem from claims that the organization misused funds.

Paxton’s office did not specify the details of the investigation or the potential consequences for the SPLC. The nonprofit has not yet responded to requests for comment.

The SPLC is known for monitoring hate groups and promoting civil rights initiatives. The organization has faced scrutiny and legal challenges over its funding and operations in recent months.
