A federal judge on Monday issued a preliminary injunction to stop Minnesota from enforcing a ban on prediction markets, just days before the measure was set to take effect.
District Judge Katherine Menendez wrote that the Trump administration, along with prediction platforms Kalshi and Polymarket, are likely to succeed on the merits of their legal challenge. The plaintiffs argue that the state ban is pre-empted by federal law, which regulates certain types of betting and trading activities.
Judge Menendez’s order indicates that the legal dispute centers on whether state restrictions conflict with federal statutes or regulations governing prediction markets. The case is ongoing, and the judge’s decision temporarily prevents Minnesota from enforcing the ban while the legal process continues.
The state had planned to implement the ban soon, citing concerns over gambling regulation and consumer protection. However, the federal challenge highlights ongoing tensions between state and federal oversight of emerging financial and betting activities.
