Gas explosion at Shanxi coal mine kills at least 82, Xinhua says

A gas explosion at a coal mine in China’s northern Shanxi province killed at least 82 people on Friday evening, the state-run Xinhua News Agency said.

Xinhua said 247 workers were trapped after the blast.

The agency did not immediately provide additional details about rescue efforts or the cause of the explosion, Xinhua said.

Xinhua is the official state news agency of China.
