Judge rules Pentagon blacklisting of Anthropic illegal, violates First Amendment

A federal judge in California ruled Thursday that the Pentagon’s supply chain risk designation for artificial intelligence firm Anthropic was illegal and violated the First Amendment, Judge Rita Lin said.

In a ruling Thursday evening, Lin said the Trump administration retaliated against the “Claude-maker” for its “constitutionally protected activity,” the judge wrote.

Lin also said the action violated the company’s due process rights, according to the ruling.

The designation had been imposed earlier this year. The judge’s decision came after legal challenges from Anthropic, which argued the government acted unlawfully.
