Lahn wins Iowa GOP gubernatorial primary, defeating Trump-endorsed Feenstra

Zach Lahn, a farmer and businessman, won the Republican nomination for Iowa governor Tuesday night, defeating incumbent-backed Rep. Randy Feenstra in a surprising upset. The race to succeed outgoing Gov. Kim Reynolds opened Iowa’s first open gubernatorial contest since 2006.

Lahn campaigned on an “Iowa First” platform and drew support from MAHA Action, aligned with the Make America Healthy Again movement. His campaign emphasized outsider credentials and a focus on local issues. Meanwhile, Feenstra, a U.S. representative for Iowa’s 4th District, entered the race as the favorite, backed by prominent Republicans and a late endorsement from former President Donald Trump.

At one point shortly after midnight Eastern time, Lahn held a lead of approximately 1,600 votes with 99% of ballots reported, according to The Associated Press. Feenstra told supporters he called Lahn to congratulate him and pledged to support his campaign against Democratic opponent Rob Sand in the general election.

Feenstra, who campaigned as a Trump ally and highlighted his support for the former president’s agenda, had a fundraising advantage and endorsements from notable Republicans, including former Gov. Terry Branstad. Despite his efforts, he failed to secure the nomination, marking a setback for his political profile.

Rob Sand, Iowa’s sole Democratic statewide officeholder, advanced unopposed in the Democratic primary. He has built a profile centered on government accountability and anti-corruption efforts. Early election analyses suggest the general election could be competitive, with the Cook Political Report moving the race to a toss-up in April. A Sand victory would mark the first time a Democrat has been elected governor in Iowa since 2006.
