Manjit Singh Bedi returned to U.S. after arrest in India in alleged $600,000 SNAP fraud

A fugitive wanted in an alleged $600,000 Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) fraud at a Tacoma grocery store was returned to the United States after his arrest in India in September 2026, the FBI said.

FBI Director Kash Patel announced the return and, according to Fox News, identified the suspect as Manjit Singh Bedi, whom the agency had listed among its Most Wanted Fraudsters.

Federal officials told Fox News that Bedi allegedly defrauded the U.S. government of at least $600,000 through a SNAP fraud scheme while operating an Asian grocery store in Tacoma between March 2024 and June 2025.

The FBI said Bedi allegedly swiped recipients’ Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards, provided cash instead of authorized food purchases and kept roughly half the benefits for himself.

After an indictment in the scheme, Fox News reported that Bedi allegedly traveled to Canada and then to India. A federal arrest warrant charging him with violating the conditions of his release was issued on May 21, 2026.

Patel said Bedi is one of six fugitives captured through the FBI’s Most Wanted Fraudsters program since the list was created three months ago and noted the FBI has secured 260 extraditions and removals over the past 20 months, an increase of more than 70% compared with the previous 20-month period, Fox News reported.

The FBI had offered a reward of up to $150,000 for information leading to Bedi’s arrest and conviction, the report said. Patel wrote that Bedi will now face justice in the United States and thanked foreign law enforcement partners for their assistance.
