Newsom seeks answers from RFK Jr. over comments about Black children on ADHD meds

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) on Friday said he demands answers from Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. regarding comments the secretary made in an interview in 2024 about Black children on certain attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) medications being “re-parented.”

Newsom criticized Kennedy Jr. publicly, saying, “We’ve known RFK Jr. has been unfit to serve as Secretary, but” — the statement was cut off in the initial report.

Kennedy Jr. has faced scrutiny over comments he made regarding the treatment of Black children on ADHD medication, which critics say are racially insensitive. The governor’s demand for clarification highlights ongoing tensions surrounding Kennedy Jr.’s role and statements.

HHS has not yet issued a response to Newsom’s call for answers. The controversy adds to the broader debate over medical treatment and racial disparities in healthcare.
