Trump administration reverses course, extends waiver on Russian oil sanctions

The Trump administration reversed course Friday and extended a waiver on U.S. sanctions for Russian oil and petroleum products, the Treasury Department said.

The Treasury Department posted a license allowing countries to purchase Russian oil from Friday through May 16, the department said.

The extension comes days after a top Cabinet official said the U.S. would not extend the waiver, according to the official.

The move comes amid tensions in the region tied to the Iran war. The Treasury Department did not provide further details in the posting.
